A High Wycombe drug driver has been banned from the roads after he was caught over the legal limit by police a day after he smoked cannabis at home.

At a hearing at Wycombe Magistrates’ Court on Monday, Adam Newson, aged 27, of Eaton Avenue, pleaded guilty to drug driving in Wycombe.

The court heard how on December 20 last year at 4pm, Newson was driving to the shops with his girlfriend to do a food shop when police pulled him over because his Citroen Saxo Index had a defective brake light.

After officers spoke to Newson, the decided to do a roadside drugs test, which he failed. The court heard from defence lawyer Sophie Bell that he had smoked cannabis at home the night before.

Ms Bell said: “He thought he wouldn’t be over the legal limit.”

“He thought he was being sensible, he was doing his food shopping with his girlfriend.

“It’s not a case where he’d been smoking and then went out to have fun.”

Ms Bell also told the court that Newson smoked cannabis to address his depression and anxiety, and that he is now seeking help from One Recovery Bucks to stop doing drugs.

Sentencing, the magistrates gave Newson, who works at Sainsburys, an 18-month driving ban.

Newson was also given a £161 fine and told to pay £119 costs.
