A High Wycombe dad has spent thousands of pounds converting his children's toy car into the world's first road-legal kid's vehicle - capable of hitting speeds of up to 22mph.

James Scudder, 35, souped up his children's £800 RiiRoo Super Sports XL as a way to pass the time during lockdown.

But after he was pulled over by police while taking it for a spin, he challenged himself to transform the plastic toy car into a fully road-legal motor.

He spent hundreds of hours working in his garage wiring up indicators, brake lights, headlights and sidelights to make it drivable on public roads.

The dad-of-five also kitted it out with a Pioneer sound system and subwoofer as well as a spoiler on the back, giving it the appearance of a sporty Porsche Boxter roadster.

It also boasts 10-inch moped tyres, an electric battery with a range of 12 to 15 miles and is now fully MOT'd, taxed and registered with the DVLA.

The mini-car can reach 22mph in around 10 seconds and has a working horn, brakes, opening doors and also the ability to reverse.

IT worker James said: "I just got bored during lockdown to be honest.

"I was lucky enough to continue working from home but I felt like I needed a little project to work on.

"I bought this car for my kids and when I took it out one day, I got pulled over by the police, which was a little embarrassing.

"I shouldn't have been out in public on it, I hold my hands up, but I thought why not go and make this thing fully road legal.

"It proved much more difficult than I thought. I'm not massively into cars and I'm not an electrician or mechanic so all the wiring was pretty tricky but I got there.

"I worked several hours a night, every day, between April and September to get it to the finished state you see today.

"I did a lot of research into EV batteries but ended up spending £400 on one that did not work properly. So there's been a few obstacles and hiccups along the way.

"I don't even want to figure out how much I've spent as I'm scared to tell my other half but it definitely runs into the thousands.

"The kid's love it though, obviously they can't go out on the roads but we have great fun with it up the local park and in the garden."

The RiiRoo Super Sport XL model is originally equipped with a 12-volt motor producing 180 watts.

James replaced it with a more powerful 24-volt 650-watt brushless motor to give the vehicle more speed.

Youtuber James, who is also known as Stitch76 and has five children aged between the ages of one and 17, added: "It's like a little plastic go-kart really.

"People definitely do a double take when they see me whizzing along the roads on it.

"It has a variable speed limit for the kids so they aren't belting around at 22mph. I usually set it at around 8mph for them.

"I've upgraded the battery so the range is now about 12 to 15 miles, but you wouldn't want to go that far in it because there's no suspension.

"You definitely feel every bump in the road so there's a bit of discomfort. But you're driving around in a kid's toy car so you'd expect that really.

"It's fully road legal and if you put that registration plate into the DVLA website, you'll see that's the case.

"It definitely isn't for sale but I might consider making some to order. My next challenge is to create the world's fastest kids' ride on car and that certainly will be a challenge."
