The new owners of Mary Berry’s former Penn home are planning to make big changes to the Grade II listed home where she lived for decades.

The six-bed mansion, called Watercroft in Church Road, is where Mary filmed several of her most famous cookery shows, but she relocated to Henley-on-Thames in 2018 with husband Paul Hunnings.

Mr and Mrs Patten, the new owners of Watercroft – which already boasts six bedrooms, five bathrooms and three reception rooms – have plans to carry out a string of improvements.

Their proposals are mostly internal, and agents say the changes would only really be obvious from above.

The new owners have asked Buckinghamshire Council for permission to create a new bedroom in the roof space and to rip out a wall dividing two of the bedrooms on the first floor.

The modern fitted cupboards in one of the bedrooms will also be stripped out, while the chimney stack will be made smaller.

Shower fittings will also be upgraded and a full-height French door opening into the bedroom will be restored.

The drawing room on the ground floor will have its decorative pilasters – which give the appearance of a supporting column but are attached to the wall – removed.

Some new dormer windows and rooflights will also be added to the property’s coach house and brewhouse.

The agents for the applicants say the “minor alterations” will have no significant impact on the character of the Penn and Tylers Green Conservation Area.

Watercroft dates back to around 1815 and had associations with the Grove family, who were wheelrights in the 18th century.

The attached coach house and brewhouse date back to the mid-19th century.

Buckinghamshire Council will now decide if the changes can be made to the Grade II listed property.
