An RAF servicewoman from Wendover has ran 50 laps around a lake in Wales in memory of her late father.

Abby Nascimento, who is currently based at RAF Halton, completed the challenge to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund, which is the RAF’s leading welfare charity, and Calon Hearts, the leading heart charity in Wales.

The 32-year-old, who spent six years as a physical training instructor and the last two as a commissioned officer, was supported by the RAF Benevolent Fund through its Listening and Counselling Service, after her dad suddenly passed away in April 2020.

The Fund provides this service for RAF personnel, veterans, and their partners.

Abby said: “When I lost my dad, I knew I wanted to do something for charity in his memory and given the support the Fund offered me, it seemed like a perfect fit.

“Before dad died, he took daily walks around Cwmbran Boating Lake, where his memorial bench now sits.

“We both hated running, so I decided to follow in his footsteps by running laps of the lake, starting and finishing at his bench.

“Considering I didn’t train for my marathon, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the challenge.

“However, the last six miles were definitely the toughest.

“My wife Megan ran alongside me every step of the way, and it helped having friends and family along the course to encourage me and keep my spirits up.

“I feel so overwhelmed by people’s support, generosity and kindness.”
