Parkrun returned to The Rye in High Wycombe as part of the loosening of lockdown restrictions earlier this week.

The weekly community event which takes place each Saturday morning at 9am in parks across Britain with the first run this morning.

Participants took part in a 5km run against the clock in what was the 392 Parkrun event at the Rye.

The event is free to take part in but runners must register to get their individual barcode.

Runners ran by themselves, in groups, with their children, with push-chairs and even their dogs.

Wes Ball, 42, a public affairs director from Buckinghamshire, took part in the run and praised to community spirit the event creates.

He said: “Parkrun is one of the best things of my life really.

“When you get there it is one of the most uplifting things you can do.

“It’s never a race, it’s always a chance to go running with friends.”

During lockdown, he and other fellow runners held virtual Parkruns on Facebook where people undertook challenges or posted selfies to keep the community spirit alive during lockdown.

He continued: “Parkrun really isn’t about running, it’s about communities”

“It doesn’t matter whether you’re four or 90, people will welcome you.”

Runner, Toby Sowood has taken part in Parkrun before and was glad to see the event return.

He said: “It’s on every week and its just come back.

“It started a few years ago and it’s spiralled from there.

“There loads all around the country, wherever you’ve go.

“I have done a few of them here and its usually pretty busy.”

As part of restrictions outdoor running events will continue to take place with big events such as the London Marathon, the Great North Run and the Brighton Marathon returning.

The chairman of the Local Government Association’s Culture Tourism and Sport Board, Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson, said: “The LGA is delighted to see the return of Parkrun today.

“These popular events are incredibly valuable for many people in supporting both their physical and mental health and wellbeing.

"We’re thankful to both Parkrun and councils for their patience and hard work in supporting the safe return of these events.”
