Wanderers’ development team trialists were in action once again against Aylesbury United last week, and they put in an excellent display that yielded a 3-1 victory.

Having drawn 1-1 against Chesham United, the team played Beaconsfield Town behind closed doors a week later, with Sam Grace’s side continuing to be fine-tuned as fans get closer to discovering which select few are signed up.

Only a handful of trialists remain at the club that were also there in the early stages of pre-season. Goalkeeper Tyla Dickinson played against both Chesham and Aylesbury United, as did former Yeovil man Gabriel Rogers.

The goalscorer against Chesham, Ethan Dekel-Daks, didn’t feature against ‘The Ducks’, but there were several new faces that certainly impressed.

After falling a goal behind, a stunning strike from Wanderers’ number 17, believed to be former Worthing midfielder Ricky Aguiar, drew the Chairboys level.

Wycombe were the dominant side in the second half and scored two well-worked goals as well as coming close on several other occasions.

Despite a defensive slip for Aylesbury’s goal, the Wanderers team looked much more solid at the back.

Ben Tricker was at the heart of the backline alongside Abdi Mohamed.

6” 4 Tricker left Fulham recently and has also had spells at Watford and Harrow Borough.

His gangly running style doesn’t take away from a good passing game and composed defensive positioning.

Mohamed, meanwhile, most recently played in the American lower leagues and has also been on the books at Bournemouth. He is another skilful defender who’s not afraid of going past a man or two.

He wouldn’t be the first Chairboys development player to have previously plied their trade in the US, with Curtis Anderson and Paco Craig doing so, as well as Giles Phillips, who enjoyed a couple of spells in the first team, before leaving for Aldershot.

All of the trialists are on very short-term deals at Wycombe, so don’t have long to impress, but you’d like to think that several of the players involved against Aylesbury will get the chance to extend their stays in south Bucks.

With the amount that are coming through the door, the chances of finding the next Anis Mehmeti aren’t too remote.

Mehmeti was playing in the depths of non-league before joining Wycombe, similar to some of the trialists that are at the club at the moment, and before the Albanian knew it, he was one of Wanderers’ key players in the Championship, appearing on 29 occasions.

The development squad trialists take on Hanwell Town this evening [Friday, July 30] in their latest pre-season outing as decision day gets closer for the budding professionals.
