Plans for a new discount supermarket on the site of a former Jaguar showroom are expected to be decided this week.

In March, Aldi unveiled plans to open a store in London Road West, Amersham.

Residents received a feasibility study from the supermarket giant, with dozens backing the plans.

Sam Sheppard submitted an application to Bucks Council in May on behalf of Aldi, with the plans seeing the demolition of the car showroom, valeting services and outdoor vehicle display area to make way for the supermarket, if they are given the go-ahead.

A new vehicle entrance and exit (from London Road West), servicing and landscaping are also proposed, with 101 parking spaces, according to council documents.

And the new store is expecting to employ 15 full-time staff and 20 part-time workers.

An online feedback form saw more than 93 per cent (549) of people in support of the proposal, while just over five per cent (30) were not in favour, and ten people were unsure.

While many of the comments on the formal plans were in favour, a number of people did object, with Virginia Wedgwood questioning whether the town needs another supermarket and raising concerns about increased traffic.

Cllr Jonathan Waters, Buckinghamshire councillor for the Penn Wood and Old Amersham ward, called the plans in if they are recommended for approval, saying: “I am concerned about the highways issues due to the significant increase in traffic from the current use, potential for light pollution to neighbouring residential properties, and design.”

Its proposed opening hours are Monday to Friday, 8am-10pm, with the same hours on Saturday. Sunday and Bank Holiday opening hours will be 10am-5pm.

A decision is expected to be made today (August 11). Buckinghamshire Council has been contacted for confirmation.
