In 1875 there were 62 public houses in the town of High Wycombe. Only five of these were in the High Street, reflecting its status as the commercial centre of the town.

One of these was the Wheatsheaf, which is featured on the main Nostalgia page with regards to the progress being made with the restoration of the building.

By far the largest and most imposing of the 65 public houses was the Red Lion, a former coaching inn.

In the 20th century until its demolition in the 1960s, it was the venue for the majority of the important social functions for companies, clubs and associations in the town.
