The new junction at Crest Road in High Wycombe has opened following traffic light testing
There have been roadworks on Crest Road and John Hall Way since January but the "Cressex Island" junction has now been given to green light for full access to nearby businesses and retailers.
Buckinghamshire Council says the new "intelligent" traffic signal layout will pave the way for the planned arrival of McDonald's and Aldi at Cressex Island, which has been a wasteland for years.
Steven Broadbent, Buckinghamshire Council Cabinet Member for Transport said that given the busy location, the scheme needed careful planning to minimise disruption for local people and businesses.
He said: "We've really appreciated everyone's patience and understanding while we've been delivering this scheme. It's not been easy, but the bulk of the work has now been done and the junction open for business.
"Now that the traffic lights are on, we will continue to carry out careful monitoring of how things are performing so we can get the best traffic flow possible, particularly at peak times.
"What we now have is a vastly improved junction, brand new road surfacing and a shared use footway and cycleway - a fitting investment for the future in this area of the town."
Engineers will remain on site for the next few weeks completing the final elements of the scheme.
