Those who served in the Battle of Britain were honoured in a moving service attended by the High Wycombe mayor and other dignitaries at the weekend.

The annual event at All Saints Parish Church pays homage to those who fought in the Battle of Britain, a major 112-day air campaign fought in the skies between July and October 1940.

September 15, 1940, saw the RAF gain a decisive victory over the Luftwaffe in what was Nazi Germany’s largest daylight attack.

Some 1,120 Luftwaffe aircraft were sent to attack London, but were repelled by just 630 RAF fighters – and two days later Hitler postponed his plans to invade Britain.

An act of thanksgiving and commemoration to all those who fought in the campaign was held at All Saints Church in High Wycombe town centre on Sunday, September 19.

It was led by Reverend Hugh Ellis from All Saints, Reverend Chrissie Lacey, station chaplain at RAF High Wycombe and Reverend Wendy Bull, chaplain to the mayor.

Attendees included new High Wycombe mayor Andrea Baughan, Wycombe MP Steve Baker, Buckinghamshire Council chairman Zahir Mohammed and High Sheriff for Buckinghamshire George Anson.

They sung hymns, read poems and prayers and laid wreaths at the church's war memorial.

Mayor Cllr Baughan said: “It was an honour and privilege to be part of the remembrance for all of those who served in the Battle of Britain.

"We are forever grateful for their service and courage.”
