A big refurbishment of a village pub is planned – including a new ‘beer garden bar’ and extra parking.

Paolo Gilardoni, of Greene King, has submitted to Bucks Council plans for The Crown Inn, on Church Road, in Penn.

Internal works include alterations to the bar and the relocation of customer toilets into the cellar, as well as other refurbishment works.

External works include a single-storey rear extension with a new kitchen and bar to serve the beer garden, and a staff break room.

Plans also detail installation of timber seating, construction of an outbuilding to house disabled access and family toilets, and a glass canopy over part of a patio seating area.

There will also be a new children’s play area.

Parking spaces will increase from 55 to 70; disability spaces from two to three.

The scheme aims to “improve [the] customer’s dining experience and address operational and commercial viability issues, bearing in mind also the recent effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the hospitality sector.”

The Crown is a Grade II Listed 16th Century pub and restaurant. It was once a five-bed inn hosting workers from Penn House Estate and large shooting parties.

Council officers will now decide what becomes of the application.
