Headteacher of Wycombe High School, Mrs Sharon Cromie, speaks exclusively to the Bucks Free Press.

One hundred and twenty-one Wycombe High students were out in the wilds of the Chilterns in torrential rain last weekend, on an expedition for their Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

And, despite the appalling weather, a great time was had by all.

As Year 10 student, Anya Brain put it: “We all got absolutely soaking wet, but we had an absolutely amazing time”.

In other news, the new school year may have only just begun but already preparations are well underway for the arrival of new students next year.

In the past three weeks, more than 500 Year 6 students and their families have visited Wycombe High, for a face-to-face tour of the school – the first since lockdown.

Meanwhile, this year’s Sixth form Exploration Live! Event, for Year 11s currently at Wycombe High, as well as those thinking of transferring from other schools, promises to be the biggest and best yet.

The online live TV event and Q&A session is being presented by Head Girl, Evie Hutton and her two deputies, Pehrr Ramrakhyani and Martha Powell. It will showcase the courses on offer and give you the chance to discover why Wycombe High may be the perfect choice for you.

Meanwhile, it has been a summer of success for Wycombe High student musicians:

•Lotte Cook (Y12) was accepted into the National Concert Band of the Royal Air Force Cadets.

•Diya Sohi (Y12) won the West End Musical Theatre showcase. She performed If I Love You from the musical Carousel, in front of industry professionals and casting directors and received a scholarship to train at the West End Musical Theatre Training School

•Katie Harrison (Y13) was accepted into the Royal College of Music Junior Department, where she is a member of the Symphony Orchestra and principal cellist of the Chamber Orchestra.

•Alice Mizelli (Y11) was accepted into the Senior National Youth Harp Orchestra

•Lucy Palfery (Y9) was accepted into the Royal College of Music Junior Department and the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain

•Francesca Luker (Y13) released her second single with her band

Lots of success too for the school’s sporting students:

•Charlotte Simpson (Y12) joined the England Academy netball training camp

•Lily Doherty (Y1o), played tennis on the actual grass courts at Wimbledon and is now ranked at number 16 in the UK for her age

•Hollie Lumsden (Y13 became the British Junio Ladies Champion in shooting.

•Isabelle Tucker (Y13) alongside her beach volleyball partner, won an £18,000 grant to train for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham next year.

Now that lockdown is over, live events are back at Wycombe High. The delayed Summer Concert went ahead last month, with last year’s Year 13 students coming back for one last hurrah.

Students are already rehearsing for the Autumn Concert later this month as well as the Christmas Concert, and Christmas Carol Service at All Saints Church in High Wycombe.

Families will be able to attend all three events, but the school is also planning to broadcast them live around the world via Wycombe High TV, with students again taking on ALL the production roles, as well as presenting and performing.
