A couple who ran over a tyre spike while holidaying in Bucks said unless it was “targeted” they have “no doubt” there will be more on the road.

Drew Pyper, from Scarborough, and partner Helen were visiting Chalfont St Peter for a family birthday celebration when they drove over a triangular tyre spike on Sunday.

The pair were “somewhere between West Drayton and Chalfont St Peter” but were unable name the road because they are not local.

They did however say they were not on the M25 and on a fairly direct route.

They had to take the car to Kwik Fit in Amersham for repair.

Drew questioned the item’s legality and its sale online, urging authorities to investigate.

Spikes like the one in Drew’s tyre do appear to be available on certain recognised websites at relatively low cost.

Writing to Bucks Council and Thames Valley Police (TVP), Drew said: “Just pulled this from my tyre. On holiday in the Amersham/Chalfonts area.

“Looks suspiciously like what is being sold [online]. How is this legal btw?

“Would be good to see officials tackle the sale of these items.”

Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS), Drew said: “We were in motion when the engine light came on.

“I’ve no doubt that, unless we were targeted and the spike was wedged, there will be more of these on the road. Hope it raises awareness.”

Drew said the staff at Kwik Fit “sorted us out last minute”. Adding: “They were very helpful, flexible and super understanding.”

Luke Spittles, 19, who works at Kwik Fit, said: “That’s the first time I’ve seen one of them around this area.

“I had one in High Wycombe before, ages ago.”

Bucks Council referred the Free Press to TVP who were approached for comment.
