A local resident believes "someone could have died" as a wall collapsed weeks after the devastating fire at the Kings Hotel in Stokenchurch.

A pathway next to the hotel has been covered with bricks as the local could hear the "almighty crash" from his home on October 31, over three weeks after the fire.

The Stokenchurch resident believes that if someone was in the area at the time that they would have been "seriously injured or killed".

The hotel, on Oxford Road, was largely destroyed in a fire that broke out at 8.20pm on October 8 as firefighters tackled the blaze throughout the night.

On October 13, Bucks Fire and Rescue informed Buckinghamshire Council of concerns of the "stability" of the gable end of the building that dates back to the 16th century.

The council confirmed that they revisited the site and carried out a "limited access assessment" coming to the conclusion that there was "no additional risk to safety at this point in time or the immediate future".

Bucks Free Press:

Gareth Williams, Cabinet Member for Planning and Regeneration said: "At the request of the fire service, a senior building control surveyor visited the site on October 13.

"A limited access assessment was carried out rather than a full survey as access to the whole site was not available.

"At this time, the surveyor concluded that as far as they could see, the wall in question was not showing signs of cracking or movement and no indications were visible that it was unstable.

"The council has received no direct requests to revisit the site following the collapse of the wall, but a surveyor followed up with a site visit.

"Their assessment concluded that there is no additional risk to safety at this point in time or the immediate future, but the council will keep an eye on the situation and liaise with the owners to ensure all safety measures are met."

A Bucks Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "On 8 October 2021, Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service attended a significant fire at the Kings Hotel, Stokenchurch.

"Structural stability was monitored throughout the incident, with particular focus on the gable end.

"Following the conclusion of the emergency phase of this incident on October 9 responsibility was handed over to the owner of the site.

"On 13 October, whilst undertaking Fire Investigation activities, concerns were raised in relation to the stability of the gable end of the premises.

"Buckinghamshire Council were informed of this and undertook a survey of the site, which resulted in no concerns being identified that would prohibit the use of neighbouring property."

The hotel has said it will be closed for the "foreseeable future" with fire crews confirming the hotel blaze started in the kitchen and because of the age of the building, the flames quickly travelled quickly to the roof.

All guests and staff from inside the hotel were accounted for and made it safely out of the building.

A post on the Kings Hotel's Facebook page says the hotel is currently looking for alternative venues to host events that were booked in for the remainder of this year and into 2022.
