Police have warned the public to look out for “strange lights” and “vehicles flying” after dark between High Wycombe and Princes Risborough.

In a post on social media, TVP Wycombe asked if anyone had spotted “strange lights in the field” along the side of the A4010 – and urged those who do to call 999 immediately.

The cause of these strange goings on? No, not the supernatural – hare coursers.

Police have urged anyone who notices bright lights or "vehicles flying out of gaps you never knew were there" in the fields between Wycombe and Princes Risborough after dusk to call 999 as hare coursers are suspected to be operating in the area.

The criminals, who chase after helpless hares with greyhounds and other dogs, have been breaking into fields, cutting padlocks on gates and driving 4x4s through hedges.

In another post online, officers warned that livestock could get loose as the offenders break open field gates and leave them wide open for animals to walk through – potentially putting them in danger.

It said: “Concerns have been raised regarding the potential for livestock to escape in rural areas after coursers have cut padlocks to gates.

“Have you seen lights in a field after dusk, 4x4's driving onto/off a field or even through a hedge?  Please report on 999.”
