Buckinghamshire Council has branded the survey ranking High Wycombe among the worst places to live as "unscientific".

Satirical website iLiveHere each year asks the public to review their area as they rank the nation’s towns and cities throughout the country.

After 110,172 people responded the website named Aylesbury the worst place to live in England the country with High Wycombe also making the list at number 35.

Residents from both towns have since slammed the list saying it was not backed up by "actual facts or stats".

Aylesbury Town Council leader, Cllr Richard Lloyd also disagreed with the survey believing it provided an "unfair portrayal".

Gareth Williams, Buckinghamshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning and Regeneration agreed saying it was an “unscientific” survey that contained “unpleasant and offensive content about many places in England.”

He continued: “It’s disheartening to see negative comments about High Wycombe included but we appreciate people are entitled to their opinion and to share it – we obviously strongly disagree here at the Council.

“We think High Wycombe is a fantastic destination for residents and visitors alike.

“It’s a thriving market town surrounded by beautiful landscapes.

“Its rich history can be seen at the heart of the preserved Medieval High Street, which has held a street market since at least the Middle Ages.

“High Wycombe also boasts a creative cultural offer with the famous Swan theatre and lots of other events – including the regular Wycombe Arts Festival.

“High Wycombe ranks among the safest large towns in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and offers residents and visitors a bustling atmosphere with a great selection of shops and a lively nightlife.

“It’s also just a short walk to the magnificent Wycombe Rye, a picturesque green open space with play areas and a boating lake.

“The council recently agreed the High Wycombe masterplan, which sets out to transform the public spaces, strengthen the economy and bring the town together.

“These changes introduce long term strategies, such as making the town more ‘pedestrian-friendly’ and creating new opportunities for businesses.

“High Wycombe is a great place with an exciting future!”

Mayor of High Wycombe, Cllr Andrea Baughan, also added that she believes High Wycombe is a “fabulous place to live”.

She said: “The people I have met during my time as both Mayor and Councillor have always been really supportive, looked after their town and been extremely kind and proactive during the last few difficult months we have had.”
