One of the UK’s most lavish five-star hotels is right here on the edge of Buckinghamshire, new data has revealed ahead of Valentine’s Day.

Loved-up couples might be looking for a romantic place to spend their Valentine’s weekend, but those in Bucks do not need to look too far if they are hoping for a luxurious getaway.

New research has found the top ten most expensive luxury hotels to stay at – and Cliveden House, on the border of Bucks and Berkshire, comes in at number nine in the list.

A recent study by luxury experts, Instrument furniture, analysed 106 five-star UK hotels that are listed as ‘luxury’ on TripAdvisor, to reveal how much a couple could spend for one night’s stay in the UK’s most lavish accommodations on February 12, for Valentine's weekend.

Cliveden came in ninth place, with couples expecting to fork out £945 for a one-night stay.

Cliveden House’s website said it was always destined to be a romantic retreat, ever since the 2nd Duke of Buckingham built the mansion as a gift for his mistress, the Countess of Shrewsbury, in 1666.

Since then, it has remained a “pinnacle of intrigue and glamour for the elite” and also played a part in one of the most infamous scandals that shook the British parliament – the Profumo Affair in 1963.

The Conservative war minister John Profumo was at Cliveden House, near Taplow, when he first met 19-year-old Christine Keeler in 1961 and began a relationship.

Ms Keeler was also involved with a naval attache at the Soviet Embassy and Mr Profumo, who was married to actress Valerie Hobson, resigned in 1963 amid major concerns about a serious security risk.

Prime Minister Harold Macmillan did not recover from the crisis that engulfed the government - resigning seven months later and the Conservatives lost the general election the following year.

More recently, the Grade I listed hotel – set in 376 acres of ground – hit the headlines again when Meghan Markle chose to stay there the night before her marriage to Prince Harry in May 2018.

The hotel boasts incredible views across the Thames and the countryside beyond, has a luxurious spa and plenty of grounds – which houses the Fountain of Love – to stroll around.

The most expensive five-star hotel in the UK is Hotel 41 on Buckingham Palace Road in London, costing two adults £1,965 a night, although it does come with a Savoir bed, marble bathrooms and a Nespresso machine.

The second most expensive is another hotel that isn’t too far away – Les Manoir aux Quat 'Saisons, A Belmond Hotel, in Great Milton, Oxfordshire.

That will set couples back £1,515 a night to stay in.
