A fire has swept through a Bucks town centre pub, resulting in serious smoke and flame damage.

The Broad Leys in Wendover Road, Aylesbury, was attended by two fire engines early on Friday morning after fire broke out inside.

The inferno started in the pub's boiler room, on the first floor, and resulted in interior and exterior damage to the building.

Fortunately, no one was harmed in the incident and all people in the immediate area were accounted for.

Firefighters used two hose reel jets and a thermal imaging camera to identify where the flames were coming from and to ensure the blaze was fully doused.

Police were on hand to close the road while the firefighters did their work, and nearby gas and electric supplies were isolated to prevent any further damage or disruption.

In a post on social media, the pub's staff reassured their patrons that everyone was safe, and that they were looking on the bright side.

In a post on Facebook, the pub said: "Happy fireday folks! Thank you for all the support and well wishes we have received, especially big thanks to the Bucks & Herts fire brigade who responded so quickly and ensured that the damage caused was limited."

The pub was forced to close on Friday due to the damage, but the team were hopeful that they would reopen their doors in the near future.

They said: "We can thankfully confirm that no one was hurt and the fire was contained.

"Finally, apologies to anyone we made late to work/school or getting booked into the police cells next door."

On Facebook, many of the pub's patrons expressed relief that no serious damage was done.

One commenter said: "Glad everyone was safe and hope the affected building can be restored.

Another added: "We live opposite and wondered what had happened when all the fire engines turned up. Hope there isn’t too much damage."
