Wetherspoons recently purchased a building on Marlow high street leaving locals in the debate about the potential arrival of a new pub.

The pub chain now owns the M&Co site in Market Square but a spokesman said the company still needs to obtain both planning and licensing permission.

There are no details on any opening dates just yet and it hasn’t yet been confirmed what the pub will be called or when building work is due to start.

M&Co is still open for business and has a 10-year lease running to March 2029.

It is rumored they paid £3.5 million for the property.

The news of the chain’s purchase caused split opinions online with many on Facebook embracing the fact Wetherspoons could be coming to the town.

Jenny Walker said: “Fantastic so very welcome brilliant not all of us can afford the expensive restaurants our money doesn’t go that far.”

Marly Adcock said: “You’ll see me in Wetherspoons every day.”

Toby Randall said: “Brilliant. Hope it closes all the overpriced “gastro” pubs. People want value for money nowadays.”

Gary Nuttall said: “How many pubs did there used to be when Marlow had a smaller population?

“People who don’t like the low-cost food and drink that Wetherspoons venues are known for still have plenty of choice of more expensive places in the area.

Some were disappointed M&Co would be replaced but admitted they would still pop in for lunch.

Philippa Gordon added: “Will miss this shop on our Fridays in Marlow.

“Although at least we can have somewhere nice (cheap and cheerful) for lunch.”

However, others were not as pleased with the news.

Lee Dopson said: “When two pubs have recently closed down, you would’ve thought they would have purchased one of those properties so no change of use is necessary.”

Sue Challinor added: “That’s a shame wouldn’t use Wetherspoons if it was the last place.”

Whilst others joked. Darren Keen said: "First was Lidl, now Weatherspoons, what next? pound shops!!"

The site is next door to the former Steamer Trading which is currently undergoing works to transform it into an Everyman Cinema.

Wetherspoon has also recently revealed plans to turn the former Prezzo building in Beaconsfield into a new pub spending more than £2 million on overhauling it.

Other local Wetherspoons include The Falcon in High Wycombe, the Bear in Maidenhead, the Catherine Wheel in Henley and the Hope and Champion at the M40 Junction 2 Beaconsfield services.
