A NEW green bin charge will come into effect in the summer – to local ‘disappointment’.

The charge, which will come into force in July, will be £50 per bin, per year.

People in the former Wycombe district area are not currently charged, whereas other areas such as the former Aylesbury Vale, Chiltern, and South Bucks patches have an opt-in service charging for collection of garden waste.

The move will “harmonise garden waste services across Buckinghamshire”, said cabinet member for climate change and environment, Cllr Peter Strachan.

It is estimated to generate an additional gross income to the council of between £900,000 and £1,100,000 per year.

“It is neither logical nor fair to provide a free service in only one area of the county,” he added.

The extra money will be used to ‘balance the council’s budget’, he also said.

Cllr Katrina Wood said she was disappointed about “yet another move that disadvantages” Wycombe residents, referring, in part, to a recent council tax hike.
