Fans of BBC One’s Holby City said an emotional farewell to the popular medical drama as its final episode aired last week – but it’s not all sad news, as a “huge amount” of medical equipment is set to benefit a Buckinghamshire animal hospital.

Staff at Tiggywinkles, the world’s leading wildlife hospital based in Haddenham, said they were “very grateful” for a large donation of medical supplies after Holby City producers got in touch with them.

The Casualty spin-off, which was created by Tony McHale and Mal Young, debuted in 1999 and its last episode aired on March 29.

The drama followed the lives of staff at the fictional Holby City Hospital, the same hospital as Casualty.

The BBC announced last year that it had made the “difficult decision” to bring the show to a close in order to “reshape the BBC’s drama slate to better reflect, represent and serve all parts of the country”.

It stated that this was to help “make room for new opportunities” as part of the broadcaster’s “commitment to make more programmes across the UK”.

Holby City was filmed in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, just outside of London.

Sharing news of the amazing donation, Tiggywinkles said: “You may be as sad as we are that tonight’s episode of Holby City is the last one as it comes to an end after 23 long series’, but rest assured it’s not all bad news as we were contacted recently by the producers of the show who have donated an incredible amount of medical equipment to our hospital now filming is over.

“They wouldn’t give us any spoilers on what to expect from the final, but this donation will make such a huge difference to the animals we care for, and we are all incredibly grateful.”

The BBC was praised for the heartwarming gesture. One fan said: “Such good news for you. Well done BBC Holby City producers! Very sad that this is the last-ever episode.”

Another added: “Wonderful, thanks Holby City.”
