On the day of the Grand National, police in Bucks put a stop to unauthorised pony racing on a major road.

Following multiple reports from residents in Chalfont St Peter, officers responded to ongoing pony and trap racing that was taking place on the A413 on Saturday.

While on the scene, officers reported one driver for dangerous carriage of passengers, issuing with a warning.

Horse and trap racing normally involves a horse or pony pulling a two-wheeled cart with a driver on board. It is also known as harness racing.

The races are usually unauthorised and can cause major disruption for road users and local residents. There are also animal welfare concerns over racing horses and ponies on hard roads.

On Saturday, police also noticed a car being driven in a careless way behind one of the races. When they went to go and speak to the driver, they abandoned the vehicle and fled, leaving their car in the middle of the road.

After running checks, police discovered that the Mercedes had an expired MOT and had not been taxed since last year, so the officers called for it to be seized.
