An urgent warning has been issued after a con man pretending to be a parking officer has tried to scam unsuspecting drivers into paying him cash.

The fraudster is reportedly claiming to be a council civil enforcement officer and is telling drivers that the parking machines at different car parks across Wycombe are broken - so they must pay him cash instead.

Buckinghamshire Council says Thames Valley Police have been informed and are investigating.

They said: "The council would never take cash in person for car park payments.

"Where a machine is out of order, drivers will be directed to another machine, pay by phone or online or use another car park instead.

"All genuine council civil enforcement officers will wear a uniform carrying the Buckinghamshire Council logo and will carry a Bucks Council ID card.

"If you are in any doubt, please ask to see council ID or ring 0300 131 6000."
