A new offer gives Ukrainian refugees free memberships after a gym chain announced its campaign.

The gym provider Everyone Active began offering offering free one-year memberships for those fleeing the war in Ukraine.

Everyone Active operates the Chilterns Lifestyle Centre in Amersham, Chesham Leisure Centre and Aqua Vale Centre in Aylesbury.

Inspired by local authorities looking for practical ways of support of refugees, the gym hopes sport and physical activity could bring some respite for those fleeing the tragic conflict.

A spokesperson for Everyone Active said: “We understand that gym membership may not be one of their first priorities, but felt it was important to play our role and offer support where possible.

“Donating memberships would be a practical way in which to support Ukrainian refugees.

“We hope that sport and physical activity will offer a welcome slice of normality, whilst providing a safe and supportive space, so they can feel part of their local community.

The offer includes access to gym, swim and group exercise classes, public swimming and the Junior Gym for children aged 11-15, public swimming and soft play for children under 10, and Synergy Dance online dance classes accessible via a virtual fitness app.

To qualify for a free 12-month membership refugees need to provide proof of an email from the Home Office, which shows  their port reference number.

After the free one year period, the membership may be renewed in-centre for a regular paid membership.

The spokesperson added: “We hope that this offering will allow refugees to feel welcome and help them adjust to life within their local community.”
