The iconic Beaconsfield Charter Fair returned, and with it the closure of the four ‘ends’ in Beaconsfield Old Town yesterday May 9.

While the colourful Fair takes over the Old Town roundabout for one day, diversions for vehicles will be in place until 6.30am on Wednesday May 11.

Roadblocks stopped traffic other than access to properties and emergency vehicles at the London End and London Road A40 junction, at Aylesbury End near Wattleton Road junction, Wycombe End near Crazy Bear hotel and on Windsor End.

This appeared to have a knock-on effect on the nearby roads, especially Wattleton Road.

Wattleton Road was busy during school run time on Tuesday as traffic queued at the three-way traffic lights in place for roadworks between Butlers Court Road Old Lodge Drive nearer to Beaconsfield High School.

The morning queue reached the Pennyworth Place junction, and parts of Wattleton Road are closed for parking until 10am on May 11.

Bus passengers were advised by Bucks Council of the nearest alternative bus stops away from the Old Town.

These are: the ‘Cricket Ground’ stop on London Road, for service 102 to Uxbridge, the stop adjacent to Candlemas Lane on Station Road for services to High Wycombe, and the stop opposite Candlemas Lane on Station Road for services 102 and 104 to Uxbridge and 103 to Watford.

A security staff at one of the roadblocks said some drivers tried to argue their way through, but only access to houses was allowed.

The famous Charter Fair has come to town every year since 1269.

The Fair is open from 2pm until 10pm on May 10.
