This was the scene on the M40 yesterday as a car burst into flames on the hard shoulder. 

Passing vehicles had to navigate through thick plumes of smoke, just metres away from the burning car, on the London-bound carriageway near junction 3 at Loudwater. 

Fortunately, emergency services were quick on the scene and shut two lanes past the scene for safety reasons. 

Bucks Free Press reader Josslyn Stottor was passing over the footbridge at Wooburn Green and captured this footage of the blaze.

Two fire crews, one from High Wycombe and one from Beaconsfield, were called to the scene by panicked drivers at 3.36pm on Wednesday, May 11, to the southbound carriageway between Loudwater and Beaconsfield.

The car was on the hard shoulder already and firefighters used breathing apparatus and a hose reel to put the flames out.

There has been another fire on the M40 this morning, this time between junctions 6 for Lewknor and junction 5 for Stokenchurch. 

At the height of the blaze, there were six different fire crews on the scene, as a lorry fire spread to a motorway embankment and nearby sign. 

All carriageways of the motorway were closed while the firefighters established a water shuttle and tackled the fire at around 11am. 

Fire crews came from Thame, Wheatley, High Wycombe, Amersham, Slade Park in Oxford and Maidenhead.
