A “heartless” conman who would pretend to be a doctor to force his way into the homes of the elderly before stealing their money and prized possessions has been jailed.

Jim Chuter, aged 33, of no fixed address, has been locked up for 11 years after he admitted to nine counts of burglary, 16 counts of fraud and one count of robbery.

The offences took place throughout 2020 in High Wycombe and Bourne End, as well as various places across Surrey and London.

Chuter even stole an MBE medal from one of his victims.

At his sentencing hearing at Guildford Crown Court on Thursday, the court heard how Chuter would barge into the homes of older people and aggressively demand money from them in exchange for bogus work.

While inside, he would steal more cash and bank cards, which he would then use to withdraw money without his victims knowing.

In some instances, the conman would pretend to be a health worker and use the Covid-19 pandemic to confuse his victims into letting him inside. His youngest victim was aged 74 and his oldest aged 95.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Richard Tulloch, based at High Wycombe police station, said: “Chuter is a heartless criminal who had no problem in exploiting the vulnerability of elderly people for his own financial gain.

“Our sympathies remain with each of the victims in these cases, who were manipulated by Chuter and tricked and burgled of their cash.

“I hope that today’s result provides some form of justice for the victims, some of which are sadly not with us now and never got to see Chuter held to account for his abhorrent behaviour.”
