The planned road closures in Chesham to tackle flooding have been delayed.

Junctions in Chesham were set to be closed from June 27 until September 16 to tackle flooding of homes in Pednormead End.

To curb flooding issues at the spot that has “a long history of localised flooding”, the Bucks Council’s plan was to start by repairing a damaged culvert under Church Street near the Queen’s Head pub, and carry on works on Missenden Road and Wey Lane junction.

The planned 24-hour road closures sparked outrage and worry, and one resident Jo Kimber described the scheme as “ridiculous”.

Karen Clark, whose parents live on a housing estate of 90 houses on the other side of the now delayed road closures, said “no help has been offered to residents,” including elderly and disabled people living on the estate.

During previous road closures, parcel and supermarket deliveries refused to do the 15-mile detour, and taxis were five times more expensive, she claimed.

Now the Council has apologised for the “inconvenience caused by this further delay.”

Gareth Williams, Buckinghamshire Council Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Environment, said: “Due to circumstances outside our control we have had to postpone these works until next summer.

“This is due in part to technical issues relating to utilities that only came to light as part of the pre-survey works and also ecological issues.

“This also gives us the opportunity to address concerns raised by residents during consultations over these works. We have written to all local residents and businesses to explain the situation and to apologise for the inconvenience and will keep them informed with further updates as and when we are able to.”
