The former Amersham Polish Club was established 40 years ago, and the popular social club is now set for a name shake-up.

After its founding in 1982, the social and drinking club was renamed as The White Eagle Polish Club instead of its original, colloquial nickname the Amersham Polish Club.

Now the club, founded by the soldiers and their families who came to Amersham after the Second World War, is being renamed again, and this time simply as The While Eagle Club.

Club Committee member Henry Wizgier said: "Amersham is a commuter town with new residents settling here all the time, therefore they would not be expected to know much about our local history.

“To see a club with the word Polish in its title might make some of them think that it is a club that caters mainly for the Polish community. In fact that has never been the case. It has always welcomed and been frequented by all residents of not only Amersham but the entire district and beyond."

The community's social club boasts a bar selling drinks at "the best drinks prices in the Chilterns" according to the club's Facebook page.

As one of the largest hire venues in the whole district area, the club is used for events ranging from gymnastics to rock concerts.

The club's 40th anniversary will be celebrated in August.
