There has been another tragedy involving water as a 16-year-old boy dies in Maidenhead after getting into difficulty on the hottest day of the year.

Emergency services were called to Bray Lake at around 11.45am this morning after panicked 999 calls reported a boy in difficulty.

After a major search involving Thames Valley olice, Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue, Bucks Fire and Rescue, South Central Ambulance Service and the National Police Air Service, the body of a 16-year-old boy was found just after 1.30pm.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is the latest in a long line of tragedies involving rivers and lakes in the area, prompting further pleas to stay safe, especially when it can be tempting to get in the water to cool off in hot weather.

Since the Bucks Free Press posted a tribute piece to local victims in Drowning Prevention Week on June 22, two more people have lost their lives.

Just days later, a 16-year-old boy died in the Jubilee River in Taplow.

Police were called to Amerden Lane, Taplow, at 5.30pm on June 24 by members of the public who reported a child entering the water.

The 16-year-old was unable to be saved despite a ‘courageous’ and ‘brave’ effort from a member of the public who entered Jubilee River shortly after the teenager got into trouble.

Don't be tempted to take a dip in rivers, lakes or canals, even when the weather is sweltering - that's the important message from firefighters.

Even good swimmers can be caught out by hidden dangers in the water, such as fast currents, soft mud, weeds, rubbish, deep holes or freezing cold temperatures
