Firefighters rushed to a huge fire in Denham yesterday after huge billowing smoke was seen coming from the site.

A total of ten fire engines were required at a scrap yard in Field Road, Denham to combat the blaze, which was first reported at about 3.20pm.

Crews from Bucks, Oxfordshire and Berkshire were needed on the site to deal with the inferno.

Firefighters on the scene used three hose reels and a water shuttle to contain and eventually extinguish the fire.

Crews remained on the site for up to six hours, with some remaining late into the night to help dampen and douse what remained of the fire.

The fire affected a workshop which included cylinders of unknown chemicals. Staff confirmed to firefighters that these chemicals were no acetylene, a highly explosive substance.

It is not yet clear how the fire started.

Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue declared a major incident yesterday (Tuesday) following a string of large fires in the county.

Due to the enormous demand and pressure on firefighters, the service was not sending crews out to automatic fire alarms, and appealed for the public to only call 999 in an emergency.
