Discussions on reopening a driving test centre in High Wycombe are "progressing well", Wycombe's MP has said.

Furious instructors and learners were only given one week's notice that the centre, which opened up in a new location in Lancaster Road in High Wycombe last year after it was previously threatened with closure, was shutting on April 29.

It was the second time in less than two years that the centre faced closure.

A huge - and eventually successful - campaign was mounted towards the end of 2020 to find a new base for the centre after it was deemed by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) that the previous Wellington Road premises was "not a good use of public money".

A new place was found in Lancaster Road, preventing the closure - but threats loomed again in April this year, and that centre was also shut down.

All driving tests that were booked at High Wycombe were moved 18 miles away to Slough, but driving instructors branded the decision "shameful".

A campaign to get the centre reopened has been mounted, with the support of Wycombe MP Steve Baker once again.

He said in an update this week that the DVSA has been in discussions with "relevant stakeholders" to reopen a driving test centre in High Wycombe and that they are "progressing well".

He said: "The agency will make a public announcement at its earliest opportunity."
