Whipps Cross University Hospital was forced to turned away emergency admissions for 15 hours over the weekend.

A shortage of beds meant ambulance patients were diverted to neighbouring hospitals.

The walk-in centre remained open.

In a statement, Whipps Cross said: "Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust can confirm that due to lack of capacity, ambulances were diverted to other local hospitals from 8pm Saturday 16 February 2008 until 11am Sunday 17 February 2008.

The A and E department was still open and operational and seeing and treating patients who self presented during this time frame.

The decision to divert blue light ambulances is only taken in exceptional circumstances and following an assessment by the London Ambulance Service.

The Trust would like to apologise to the small number of patients who may have been affected by the temporary diversion."
