Everyman Cinema is set to open in Marlow later this year according to the company’s annual report.

The chain, which offers small screens with plush sofas and armchairs, will move into the site of the former Steamer Trading Cookshop.

The original plans showed that there will be two screens on two separate floors as well as a two-floor restaurant.

An application was recently submitted to put up external Everyman Cinema signage on the Grade II listed former market house.

There are currently 35 Everyman Cinema complexes in the UK all offering a licensed bar, food and a range of sofas to enjoy the newest blockbuster films.

Gerrards Cross is currently the only place in Buckinghamshire that boasts an Everyman Cinema but Marlow will soon join the list.

A statement from the planning application reads: “The ingoing tenant, Everyman, is a boutique cinema chain with 35 cinemas throughout the UK.

“Each cinema offers the same well known Everyman cinematic experience throughout.

“This experience includes high quality food and drink, whilst sitting in comfy sofas, providing a ‘homey feel’ in a luxury environment.

“Everyman’s offer includes a number of blockbuster and arthouse films, live Q&As, film festivals and other special events. The cinemas include a licensed bar, food, digital projection, and surround sound technology.”

The vacant site, which was previously used as a retail shop and restaurant, was initially built in 1807 as the Market House.

It originally consisted of a first-floor assembly room with the ground floor serving as a covered market area and jail.

Since then, the building has had many uses, from holding political meetings to accommodating the town’s fire and pump engine, to becoming the Crown Inn Hotel, and also serving a variety of retailing and restaurant use.

The building includes a number of iconic features such as doric pilasters and the bell and clock with permission being granted to reinstate the curved feature windows and move the entrance doors to ground floor level.

In its annual report, the cinema group unveiled its losses for 2021 dropped considerably to £5.4million, from £20.1million in 2020 as its theatre was allowed to reopen in spring after being closed for almost five months during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The theatre also run its cinemas at half capacity for a further two months, but admissions were still 69 per cent ahead of 2020.

The group said: “So far in 2022 admissions momentum has continued and we remain focussed on delivering quality customer service throughout food, drink, staff and film.”

The annual report, which was published in May, revealed that the boutique cinema will open at least three other new venues this year with one in Edinburgh opening in April, followed by Egham, Plymouth.

It also said: "strong pipeline under legal negotiations which will add to this list for 2023 over the coming weeks".

The Bucks Free Press has approached Everyman Cinema for a comment on the latest on an expected opening date.
