A 44-year-old mother died from a drug overdose after she was found unconscious by her son and her partner.

Denise Floyd passed away at Wycombe General Hospital on November 11, 2021.

Today (Wednesday) at Beaconsfield Coroners’ Court, an inquest heard how Ms Floyd was found unresponsive at her Aylesbury home by her son and her boyfriend after she had taken a combination of recreational and prescription drugs.

During the inquest, senior coroner for Buckinghamshire Crispin Butler told the court that Ms Floyd had been a “heavy class A drug user” and suffered with mental health problems.

On November 8, Ms Floyd was taken to hospital after she appeared unresponsive at home.

The court heard how both Ms Floyd’s son and partner were not immediately worried because she would “regularly” pass out. However, they called an ambulance when they realised she was not breathing and had no pulse.

Paramedics carried out CPR and rushed Ms Floyd to the intensive care unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where she was kept alive with a respirator.

She was later transferred to Wycombe General Hospital, but tragically passed away on November 11 due to the permanent damage done to her brain while she was in cardiac arrest.

During the hearing, the coroner told the court how Ms Floyd had been on a recovery programme with One Recovery Bucks. The programme had involved supervised collection of prescription medication, but in October 2021 she was granted unsupervised access.

Mr Butler advised that One Recovery Bucks had carried out a “full and thorough” investigation into Ms Floyd’s care following her death.

A post-mortem examination found traces of multiple drugs in Ms Floyd’s system. The pathologist concluded that a mixture of recreational and prescription medications created a lethal combination, resulting in the heart attack that led to her death.

The coroner added that there was no suggestion that Ms Floyd had attempted suicide.

Concluding the hearing, Mr Butler ruled that Ms Floyd’s death was drug related, caused by mixed drug toxicity.

He said: “Sadly, the damage had already been done, she was starved of oxygen for long enough so that even though she was able to reach hospital, the damage had been done and she was not able to support herself.

“As soon as she was taken off the ventilator her heart stopped.”
