England's all-time record women's goalscorer Ellen White has announced her retirement from football.

The Buckinghamshire-born footballer played for Aylesbury United Ladies & Girls FC in her youth and went on to play a main part in England’s historic win at Euro 2022.

Following the Lionesses success she was branded an “inspiration” by young girls currently playing at her childhood club.

Chairman of the club Paul Timms, 46, said that club alumna White had been “fantastic” throughout the tournament.

He said: “The girls all know Ellen from Aylesbury, we’ve got the mural in the town centre as well.

“She’s well known and the girls all want Ellen to do so well. She should definitely have her MBE, if not an OBE.”

He added: “I think the whole tournament, not just the Lionesses, they’ve had a massive impact of course, but the quality of the football played through the group stages and up to the final has really inspired the girls.”

At the age of eight when she was scouted by Arsenal, before departing for senior football with Chelsea in 2005.

Despite only being 16 years old, White became Chelsea’s top scorer for her three seasons there before moving to Leeds United in 2008.

She overcame a cruciate ligament injury to score twice in the FA Women’s Premier League Cup final against Everton in early 2010.

The striker then enjoyed a trophy-laden return to Arsenal winning seven title in three years; two WSL titles, two FA Cups and three League Cups.

She went on to play for Notts County, Birmingham City before picking up the bronze boot in 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

After this she signed for Manchester City, making 90 appearances in three seasons, scoring 34 times.

She became the WSL league’s then all-time goalscorer with her strike in a 2-1 win over Arsenal in February 2021.

She won a third Women’s FA Cup winners’ medal before captaining Manchester City to a Continental Tyres League Cup triumph in March 2022.

Her career then culminated in Lionesses' UEFA Women’s European Championship success last month.
