A loved village pub is due to reopen after going through a major refurbishment worth nearly £200,000.

The Black Horse in Great Missenden is closing for a one-month refurbishment hiatus from today (August 30) before welcoming visitors again at the end of September.

Dubbed as the top family and dog-friendly village destination pub, Star Pubs and Bars run and Heineken owned pub will go through a major makeover from top to bottom worth £180,000 – including an improved kitchen and outdoor space for beer festivals.

The Black Horse’s new licensees, Penn Street Taverns, were determined to make the pub the beating heart of the village.

Josh Jones, who co-founded the Buckinghamshire- based Penn Street Taverns with Andrew Hillier, said: “The location of the Black horse is fantastic with nothing to compete with it locally.

“It’s ideal for walkers and villagers, has great parking and plenty of space to put on charity events as well as live music, if that is what the community wants.  The residents we have spoken to so far are very supportive of our plans."

Smartening up of the pub will see a complete upgrade of the interior and exterior for a more modern look while respecting its traditional character. The kitchen improvements mean the pub can offer fresh home cooked pub classics during lunch and evening dining, and the bar will be stocked with premium cask ales, lagers and quality spirits.

The exterior will have new signage, planting and fresh grey and white painted walls and picket fence, a large beer garden catering for 40 guests.

As a cherry on top, marquees with festoon lighting will protect pub goers from the rain during the summer, while future plans include installation of a wood burning pizza oven, play equipment, animals and even a vegetable garden.

Mr Jones added: “Andrew and I will be hands-on and have taken on a new manager Maddy Pearce, who previously worked at The Cherry Tree in Flackwell Heath, to oversee day-to-day operations.

“We are looking forward to reopening The Black Horse properly, getting to know the community and breathing new life into The Black Horse.”
