Aldi plans to start construction on a new store in Amersham later this year as the supermarket is set to invest more than £10.3 million in Buckinghamshire.

In March 2021, Aldi unveiled plans to open a store in London Road West, between the A413 and A355, at the site of the former Jaguar dealership.

This came as Lookers announced in June 2019 that its luxury Jaguar showroom in the town would close, with staff moving to a new dual-branded Jaguar Land Rover site in Aston Clinton.

Aldi is still in talks with Buckinghamshire Council about the proposals on this site, with construction hoped to get underway before the end of the year if permission is granted.

According to council documents, a new vehicle entrance and exit (from London Road West), servicing and landscaping are proposed.

The supermarket's website also reveals there will be 101 parking spaces and 40 jobs created.

It said: "Aldi knows its customers are currently travelling out of the Amersham area to visit its stores.

"It has wanted to open a local store in Amersham for some time and is delighted to have identified the former Jaguar Dealership at 44 London Road West HP7 9DD as a location.

"The site will be developed, using sustainable construction materials and techniques, to provide a fresh, modern, new Aldi discount food store.

"This significant investment would create at least 40 new jobs, which Aldi would seek to recruit locally.

"The site is a disused brownfield site and will be landscaped to complement the local area.

"There will be 101 parking bays, parking for blue badge holders and parents and children.

"There will also be cycle parking and 4 electric vehicle charging points.

"These proposals would bring a much-needed discount food store to south Amersham, reducing the need to travel and ensuring the area has sufficient supermarket provision for its existing and future needs."

The supermarket’s 2022 expansion plans also include a new store in High Wycombe and Milton Keynes.

Giles Hurley, chief executive officer, Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “We’ve been helping Britain find the best value for money when it comes to their weekly shops for more than 30 years – and now more than ever we’re seeing heightened demand for our unbeatable prices.

“However, we know there are still areas that don’t have a store, or that need more to meet the increased customer demand we’ve witnessed in recent months.

"Our 2022 expansion plans are helping to achieve that, making the UK’s lowest-priced supermarket more accessible to even more people.”

The investment is part of the supermarket’s expansion drive in recent years.

It is on track to create 2,000 permanent new roles across the UK this year, and also announced last week that it would be hiring for 95 store roles in the local area between now and the end of the year.

Aldi has recently increased its minimum hourly rates, paying a minimum hourly rate of £10.50 an hour nationally and £11.95 within the M25.

The new rates of pay are boosted by the fact Aldi remains the only UK supermarket to offer paid breaks, which for the average store colleague is worth £830 annually
