Thousands of mourners are paying their respects following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

The 96-year-old died in the afternoon of Thursday, September 8 ‘peacefully’ at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

Her death has led the world to come together to honour the longest-serving Monarch in British history, who this year celebrated her diamond platinum jubilee.

Many people have descended to Windsor Castle in Berkshire to lay flowers, wear flags and reminisce on her reign.

One mourner said: “I’m sad, I’m shocked, she was one of a kind.

“She’s the only queen that we have seen it’s incredibly sad and we’ve laid flowers.

“It’s an end of an era.”

One couple, who were at the castle when the news broke at 6.30pm, said that the atmosphere was ‘respectful’ as many people arrived to send their condolences.

Another resident, who lives near the town, revealed that they had heard the news on the TV and ‘raced down’ to the castle to see what was happening.

Following her passing, many international names have left heartfelt tributes as the United Kingdom enters a period of mourning.
