A man who killed his own father is set to be sentenced after his brother revealed he is afraid of him.

Courtnay Bamford, aged 37, will soon be sentenced after he pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of John Bamford – his father – at the 77-year-old’s home.

Courtnay Bamford, who suffers with schizophrenia, has admitted to a charge of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility.

At a hearing at Reading Crown Court today (Monday), Judge Heather Norton heard evidence from experts as to what extent Bamford’s mental illness could have caused his shocking actions on April 6, 2021.

During the hearing, Courtnay Bamford’s brother, Giles Bamford, told the court about the ordeal he and his family had been through at the hands of his “remorseless” brother.

Giles Bamford said: “Not only did he take a life, he ensured that we would suffer in his wake.

“My father’s house had to be cleaned up multiple times by clean-up crews because there was so much blood. That’s something no one should have to endure.

“My daughter came to me and asked, ‘Daddy, why did Courtnay kill Grandad?’ I didn’t know the answer and I still don’t.”

Also during his speech, Giles Bamford warned that he was worried his brother would target him next.

He said: “He said he’s glad he is dead. These are not the words of a remorseful person.

“We no longer feel safe.”

During the hearing, Judge Norton heard evidence from doctors and psychiatrists about Courtnay Bamford’s condition.

After the session ended, she told the court she would consider the extent of the defendant’s diminished responsibility and would make a ruling at a later date.

Once the ruling is made, Courtnay Bamford will be sentenced.
