Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth believes the injury picked up by Jack Grimmer isn’t ‘anything too major’, following the club's elimination from the EFL Trophy.

The Scotsman was substituted right on the stroke of half-time in the Chairboys’ 1-1 draw at home against Peterborough United on October 18, after taking a knock to his leg.

Following a discussion with the club’s medical team, he was replaced by Jordan Obita moments before the interval.

Grimmer, who was captaining the side before his early departure, was playing only his third Papa John’s Trophy fixture for the club.

Speaking on the injury, Ainsworth said: “He has had an issue with the back of his knee, and he has been carrying it for quite a while.

“An experienced player like Jack knows his own body so when he says it’s time to go off you listen and hopefully, he will be back fit for Saturday.

“I don’t think it’s anything too major, but from the match, we saw Jack Wakely get a few more minutes, Jasper Pattenden was solid as ever, along with Adam Leathers.

“We’ve got good competition here and that’s what it’s all about.

“It’ll be a long season with a few knocks but once we get everyone back, I intend to make a big dent in the league.”

In unusual circumstances, Wycombe needed to defeat the Posh to book their place in the next round of the competition.

However, if Peterborough failed to lose then they would go through.

The 1-1 result on the night meant that Posh had eliminated the Chairboys, but the fixture still needed to conclude with a penalty shootout to see which team would pick up the extra bonus point.

This was redundant as it didn’t change the outcome of who went into the next stage of the cup, but a 4-3 victory for Wanderers via spot-kicks will no doubt give the players a little morale boost ahead of their trip against Milton Keynes on Saturday.

Ainsworth added: “We’re pleased with the performance, there were no injuries, Chris Forino I thought was immense again and he’s becoming a better player each time.

“No injuries going into MK, and we have just got the FA Cup and the league left and I will take both of them very seriously.”
