As Rishi Sunak became the next UK Prime Minister following resignation of Liz Truss, people on the streets of High Wycombe shared their views on the latest events.

Mr Sunak was selected as the new leader of the country and his party without a vote by the Conservative party members after he gained the support of at least 100 Conservative MPs.

His appointment comes only seven weeks after he lost the leadership race to Liz Truss, who resigned on Thursday October 20 amid political and economic turmoil.

An hour after Mr Sunak’s selection, the views of those we spoke to in High Wycombe town centre ranged from surprise to indifference to annoyance, and to respect and support.

NHS worker Hayden Peerless though Rishi Sunak should be given “two to three months” to “prove himself” before holding a general election.

He said: “I think Rishi, as long as he can keep in touch with the working class and understand that not everybody can afford whatever bloody shoes he wears, that he will be alright.

“Maybe he needs a sort of right hand wing-man, who is not from such a privileged background.

“Someone who has maybe come from a place bit below, maybe someone like Sajid Javid – I think he’s got quite humble beginnings. Someone like that as a chancellor would be a good combination.

“Rishi understands what the rich is like and keeping the rich happy, and that’s great because they bring in a lot of money and tax, and if Javid’s there sort of supporting the lower class and expressing their point of view they could be a good combo.”

“I feel like he’s going to bring the country together after all the difficulties. First Boris Johnson, then Liz Truss and now him. I think he can do it.”

Egan Deborn, who was heading out for lunch with two fellow students, said: “Extremely wealthy man helping other extremely wealthy people.

“General election would be fair, it’s been just one resignation after another.

“We’re student paramedics, and we need help for NHS. We don’t see that happening.

“It’s rich people running to benefit themselves and others like them.”

His friend James thought Mr Sunak’s selection wasn’t a win as he won “by default” as other candidates pulled out.

Yasmin Pattenden, a criminal psychology student, wasn’t aware of Rishi Sunak’s selection.

She said : ”I would like to see an election as another election would be fair.”

Shopper Helen was “pleased that he is in. Best pick of the punch if you know what I mean.”

“I wanted him to be the Prime Minister in the first place, but Liz Truss got in.

“I don’t want a general election now – it would just mess things up again. I liked the way he dealt with the economy as a chancellor. I have a lot of respect for him, and hopefully the markets will improve,” the 57-year-old High Wycombe resident said.
