Firefighters rushed to an underground car park after a lift caught on fire yesterday (October 27).

The fire started in Hampden House multi-storey car park in Aylesbury at around 5.30pm.

Nine fire engines and crews and four officers attended the scene.

Crews from Aylesbury, Hertfordshire, High Wycombe, West Ashland, Thame, Bedfordshire, Maidenhead and Bicester rushed to the scene.

A Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "The fire was extinguished by about 5.30pm.

"Firefighters ventilated the car park to clear the smoke. No vehicles, or commercial properties, were effected by the fire.

"Vale Park Drive was reopened by 6.30pm, and the High Street reopened shortly after. The car park management team, assisted by Thames  Valley Police, managed the retrieval of cars parked in the car park."

Smoke was issuing from the car park when firefighters arrived.

Thames Valley Police were also at the scene to manage road closures and a scene cordon.
