Concerned residents called for urgent action to target “dangerous” road outside a primary school.

Speeding on Copperkins Lane outside Heatherton School in Amersham by “non-school traffic” was putting young and vulnerable children at risk, a new petition said.

Following incidents with car damage on the road, a more serious accident was “a matter of time,” the petition claimed.

The petition said: “The current situation sees young and vulnerable children (as young as three), as well as residents in the area, exposed to speeding non-school traffic on this narrow, straight piece of road with blind corners at either end of it.

“We are concerned that an accident we could all have foreseen is a matter of time and it is our moral duty to avoid this while we can.”

Reducing the speed limit, a new formal crossing area and formalised measures were suggested to address the issue “to protect our children and residents on a busy and narrow road,” the petition said.

To date, almost 200 people had signed the petition

Buckinghamshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport Steven Broadbent commented: “If this petition is submitted to the council we will of course give the issue due consideration and report back to the residents.

“It goes without saying that keeping Buckinghamshire’s roads safe is a key priority.

“As speeding is only enforceable by the police, we would urge residents to raise any concerns about speeding and road safety with the local traffic management officer at Thames Valley Police.”

Heatherton School was contacted for a comment.
