Two athletes are preparing themselves for a gruelling challenge to help raise mental health awareness.

Sport enthusiast Robin Cooke, 29, and Alex Nelson, 31, are taking part in a 24 hour rowing challenge today starting today at 4pm at The Fit House Gym in Gerrards Cross in support of Movember.

The Movember movement, made famous by people growing their moustache for November, raises awareness about mental health, suicide prevention, and prostate and testicular cancer.

Robin, manager of The Fit House gym, and Alex, a local pro golfer, wanted to do their bit to help those struggling with their mental health.

Robin said: “I found throughout my time as a coach that 90 percent of my clients start off a physical transformation of sorts, but turns out it becomes much more mental, cathartic release for them.

“Everybody’s going through problems of their own that nobody else has got any idea about, so what we thought was as so many people are going through awful times in their heads, we’ll put ourselves through something that is particularly gruelling to be able to raise money and hopefully help those, who are struggling.”

The most challenging part of the row will be the night-time, Robin said.

Once finished on Monday, they will be in dire need of a big meal and will “get a steak.”

“We’re just going to try find some food, we’ll go wherever we can. It’s going to burn around 10,000 calories, so we’re going to need fuel,” Robin added.
