The children at a Buckinghamshire school learnt extreme sports when a BMX bike champion paid a visit to their school.

Mike Mullen, a six-time BMX Halfpipe Champion and former World Master Champion, had a captive audience at West Wycombe School on Tuesday (November 22).

At assembly, Mike spoke how determination, positive growth mindset and learning from failures helped him to achieve his dreams, before the Year 4,5 and 6 children jumped on the BMX workshop.

One pupil named Amaya said: “At first I thought I couldn’t do any of the tricks that Mike showed us. But then, I had a go and I used my growth mindset and I was able to ride without holding the handle.

Year 5 pupil Adam was “able to ride a BMX without holding the handle bar” and to complete a trick while standing and using his foot to move the wheel.

He said: “I wanted to challenge myself and go out of my comfort zone.”

Now both children wanted a BMX bike for Christmas, they said.

Although for some children the workshop was their first time using a bike, by the end of the session they were “peddling away,” said headteacher Ed Tang.

He commented: “It was such a fantastic day!

“I’ve worked in schools for a very long time and I’ve never seen anything as inspirational and exciting- we were hanging on his every word.”
