THE POLICE have revealed the most recent results of speed checks in the Chilterns area.

Hundreds of drivers were fined for speeding in Chesham, Amersham, Chalfonts, and Missenden area between September and November.

Roadside cameras and mobile road safety vans were used to capture drivers, as a visual deterrent and to reduce overall speed of the traffic for safer roads.

In September, mobile cameras captured 163 speeding offences and fixed cameras 151.

In October mobiles cameras caught 206 offences, and in November 438 drivers were caught using mobile cameras and 222 by the fixed cameras, Thames Valley Police said.

Speeding hotspots in Chesham and Amersham

One of the top concerns for residents in Chesham, Amersham and Chalfonts was speeding, the force’s Neighbourhood Policing Teams said.

In Chesham, most complaints about speeding were on St Marys Way, Bellingdon Road, Berkhamstead Road, Chartidge Lane and Greenway, Sergeant Roy Evans from Chesham Neighbourhood Team said.

Sgt Evans said: “I know that there are certain roads in Chesham where speeding motorist’s disturb the quality of life to local residents or there are real concern regarding excess speed. I often hear “they tear around here” yet the statistics do not always show these concerns or the percentage of speeders are very low.”

Although the Neighbourhood Team does speed enforcement in Chesham, this hasn’t been possible “as often as we would like due to policing demand and abstractions to other areas of policing,” the team said.

The force told in their latest update about crime this autumn: “To deal with speeding effectively requires a multi-agency approach ultimately to change people’s perception and habits and to make it as unacceptable. It is nice to see that many residents have signed up to speed watch in Chesham.”

Enforcing of speeding and traffic offences is primary carried out by TVP’s traffic department.

In Amersham and Little Chalfont, the speeding hotspots include Elizabeth Avenue in Little Chalfont and Amersham’s Sycamore Road.

During speed checks carried out by officers on Elizabeth Avenue between October and December from 1.30pm to 2.15pm, 66 drivers drove past the check-point, with six being over 35mph, while the highest recorded speed was 41mph. The residential road has a 30mph limit.

Speed checks on Sycamore Road, which has a 30mph limit, between 2.20pm to 2.45pm checked 120 vehicles.

Four were over 35mph, while the highest recorded speed was 39pmh.

“The police do conduct enforcement but due to the volume of motorists on our roads, we can not be everywhere at once monitoring each and every road,” Sgt Evans said.

In November 2022, the DVLA, who are mainly responsible for prosecution of untaxed vehicles, joined the Chesham Neighbourhood Team in a stint that saw tens of untaxed cars clamped and towed away, and their drivers fined.

Residents concerned with speeding are encouraged to join a local Speedwatch group through www.communityspeedwatch.org or start their own group.
