OPENING of a swimming pool has been delayed after works hit ‘another snag’.

Refurbishment works of the 111-year-old Chesham Moor swimming pool have hit a delay only days before it was set to open.

Swimmers have to likely wait for another week or two before the pool can open.

The centre’s manager Alex Jones and Chesham Town Council’s head of operational services Danny Essex said in a blog post on February 17: “Having completed these repairs and filled our lovely new pool from the adjacent well, we’ve hit another snag.

“Unfortunately the boilers for heating the water have failed.

“We’ve been working with our colleagues at Chesham Town Council to resolve this as soon as possible, but it could unavoidably take a few weeks.”

Those eager enough to swim in an unheated pool were also told to wait patiently.

“We’re sorry although the pool is filled we are unable to open for those willing to swim in unheated water. This is for logistical and safety reasons – including that lifeguards need to be trained in the pool first; and we want to welcome all levels / types of swimmer back at the same time, to a healthy heated pool.”

Pool members can have their memberships extended by the time lost, and monthly or annual memberships can be refunded depending on use by contacting ctcpool@chesham.gov.uk.

Over the years, works have been carried out to the facility environmentally friendly, including solar panel installation in 2011.

This saves an estimated four tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.

Alongside the solar panels, the pool boasts “near chemical-free water” sourced from an artesian well nearby, the pool managers said.

“And we have lovely gardens and wildflower areas maintained by volunteers and staff.

“We installed solar panels in 2011, which save around 4 tonnes of CO2 a year. The power generated goes back into the grid and we receive payment for this, which we offset against our running costs.

“A full report was carried out last week and it confirmed that the best solution was to install new boilers, thus enabling us to open to the public with everything up-to-date. While we have done our utmost to maintain them, unfortunately the boilers could not be serviced until there was water in the system and that required the pool to be filled.

“Our pool has been heated for as long as any staff here can remember- though many locals still recall chilly lessons from their schooldays. Once we’re up and running we’ll be back to heating the pool at 27-28°C all year round.

“Since 2012 we’ve been using ionisation technology to keep the pool near-chemical free; nice and healthy water and in the outdoors too,” the pool management said.
