PLANS to develop a popular area near Marlow's famous bridge have been met with criticism from residents.

Marlow Town Council is proposing to spend around £15,000 to improve The Causeway which would include installing new seating, resurfacing the grass and replacing the area's flagpole.

The town council said there would not be a significant visual change, but it hopes the plans will allow better use of area.

But a number of Marlow residents have spoken out against the proposals, citing the area’s landmark status and popular use for local events including the fortnightly outdoor market as reasons for preserving it.

One resident, Michael New MBE, said the proposed improvements to The Causeway area were creating further “event space” where it was not needed.

He added: “Higginson Park is already an area where events frequently take place. The existing Saturday market operates perfectly satisfactorily with the current Causeway layout.”

Michael also expressed concern about the environmental impact of the proposed changes, which include cutting low branches from trees and levelling grass in the area.

He said: “Although there is a slight ‘dip’ in the surface of the grass, this is around the trees and where the crocuses and scillas bloom every year. These bulbs have spread naturally. Raising the ground level around the tree trunks may harm them.”

Meanwhile, Jan Lovett wrote in a Facebook group: “It’s perfectly fine as it is, spend the money on things that really need doing. For example, the High Street pavements or children’s playground in the park.”

Robbie McFarlane agreed, writing: “There is very little wrong with it as it stands. How are they justifying the cost of that when other areas in town are desperately in need of attention?”

Linda Kennedy suggested: “Leave it as it is! Instead invest the money in attracting businesses and shops back to Marlow Town Centre.”

The comments come after Marlow Town Council met on January 24 to discuss the plans.

Marlow Town Council declined to provide further comment but are encouraging residents to email their concerns to office@marlow-tc.gov.uk by March 31.
