Drivers have been slammed for leaving rubbish on the sides of the A404 dual carriageway between High Wycombe and Marlow.

Residents travelling along the A404 have reported "awful" litter on both sides of the road over the last month on the website FixMyStreet.com.

One person wrote: "Very sad to see truly awful litter for miles along the A404 from Handy Cross to the A404, can this be a high priority to clear please?"

More residents in a Facebook group complained today of rubbish building up along the dual carriageway.

Monika Gipki wrote: "The A404 is a state and is a danger to wildlife. I really don't understand why people feel the need to chuck rubbish out of the car and onto the roads."

FixMyStreet is a map-based website that enables people to tell their local authorities about issues in their area, including potholes and graffiti.

Councillor for West Wycombe, Darren Hayday, said the litter along the road was getting worse.

He said: "Unfortunately, it's very easy for people to throw litter out of their vehicles, which is why it's bad all the way along the A404.

"The dual carriageway is too dangerous for volunteer litter picking groups and the whole road needs to be closed for the Council to tidy it up, which usually happens twice a year."

Litter picking group Marlow Wombles are one such volunteer organisation, dedicated to keeping the Marlow area clean with regular litter-picking events and community initiatives.

Maxine Caswell, founder of the Marlow Wombles, said cleaning up rubbish is an important part of taking pride in your neighbourhood.

Cabinet Minister for Climate Change and Environment, Gareth Williams, said: "Despite clear signage and requests for people not to drop litter along this stretch of the A404, many people continue to do so.

"Not only is it an eyesore for local people, but it also costs the council thousands of pounds in clean-up costs every year."

The Minister said the stretch of road is scheduled for cleaning this week and lane closures will be in place over the next 3 to 4 nights.

He added: "I would like to remind people that littering is a criminal offence. Please be responsible and take your litter home with you."
